Jeremiah SMITH d.1723

Biographical Note

Smith is described in his will as a gentleman of the parish of St Alphage, London. A catalogue exists for the 1723 sale of the library of a 'Mr J. Smith, late Rector of St. Alphage', and it is unclear whether this refers to Jeremiah.

Books

Smith's will specifies that 'my Library and Manuscripts I give and bequeath to my son Skinner Smith (excepting such as by a note under my hand I shall otherwise particularly dispose and give to his mother and to his brothers and sister...'. If this is the same J. Smith whose books are sold by retail sale in London from 13 November 1723, his books (and those of an unnamed Gentleman) are described by advertisements in the Daily Journal as being 'in most Languages and Sciences, viz. English, Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Spanish, Italian, French, and Dutch, in Divinity, History...'.
