Sir Charles HOTHAM, 5th bart 1693-1738

Biographical Note

Sor of Sir Charles Hotham, 4th bart, of Scorborough, Yorkshire, from whom he inherited the title and family estates in 1723. He was made a captain in his father's regiment in 1715, and a lieutenant-colonel in 1720. Visiting Hanover when young, he became friendly with George II before his accession to the throne in 1727, when he made Hotham a groom of the bedchamber; in 1730 he sent him to Berlin to negotiate royal marriage contracts. He was MP for Beverley 1723-38.

Books

Hotham used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 15345). The extent of his library is not known; it would have been inherited by his son Charles, 6th baronet, who was only an infant when his father died.
