William TALBOT, Bishop of Durham 1659-1730

Biographical Note

Only son of William Talbot and Mary Doughty of Lichfield and Stourton Castle, Staffordshire. Matriculated at Oriel College, Oxford in 1674. Graduated BA 1677, MA 1680, DD 1699. Received a Lambeth DD from John Tillotson, archbishop of Canterbury in 1691. Became rector of Burghfield, Berkshire, in 1682. Consecrated Bishop of Oxford in 1699. Appointed dean of the Chapel Royal under George I in 1714. Translated to the see of Durham in 1721. It was noted that his expenses exceeded his income, which led to financial embarrassments from which his son Charles Talbot, later first Baron Talbot of Hensol and lord chancellor, had to extricate him.
