William GORE ca.1675-1739

Biographical Note

Son of Sir William Gore, a wealthy London merchant, Lord Mayor of London 1701-02. Matriculated at Queens' College, Cambridge 1691, but did not graduate. Director of the Bank of England 1709-12, and of the South Sea Company 1712-15; MP for Colchester, and other constituencies, 1711-39. He purchased the manor of Tring, Hertfordshire in 1705, and that of Cricklade in 1718.

Books

Gore used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 12819). The extent of his library is not known; his lengthy will, much concerned with the disposal of property around his sons and family, has no specific mention of books, which would have been included with the residue of his goods and effects, inherited by his eldest son Charles.
