Thomas HAMILTON, 6th Earl of Hadinton 1680-1735

Biographical Note

Son of Charles Hamilton, 5th earl of Haddington (1650–1685), of Tyninghame, Haddingtonshire. He was a supporter of the union of Scotland and England and of the Hanoverians. He was wounded fighting against the Jacobites at Sheriffmuir (1715). For a number of years one of the sixteen representative peers of Scotland in the House of Lords.

Used an engraved bookplate:

Franks 13428 (Hamilton), The Right Honble. Thomas, Earl of Hadinton.

Franks records the arms as ‘Hamilton quartering Melrose’ and identifies the bookplate as ‘probably the plate of the 6th Earl, who succeeded 1685 and died 1735’.
