Robert MARTIN 1688-1740

Martin's bookplate (British Museum Franks Collection 19898)

Biographical Note

Son of William Martin, rector of Great Livermere, Suffolk. Details of his education have not been traced; he practised as an attorney in Thetford, briefly employing his brother Thomas Martin, later well known as an antiquary with a large library, as an articled clerk ca.1715-21.

Books

Martin used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 19898). The extent of his library is not known; in his will, he left his "library of books presses desks shelves and drawers" to his eldest son Robert Martin, on completion of his articles, or at the age of 21, whichever came first.
