Robert JOCELYN, 1st Viscount Jocelyn 1687/8-1756
Biographical Note
Son of Thomas Jocelyn of Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire. He was apprenticed to an attorney named Salkeld before being admitted to Gray's Inn in 1709. He became a barrister in Ireland in 1719 and an Irish MP in 1725. He was appointed solicitor-general for Ireland in 1727 and Lord Chancellor of Ireland in 1739. He became Baron Newport (in the peerage of Ireland) in 1743, and Viscount Jocelyn in 1755.
Books
Jocelyn used an engraved armorial bookplate, made before 1743 when he became a peer (Franks 16505); the extent of his library is not known.
