Richard BAYLIE 1585/6-1667

Biographical Note

Son of Richard Baylie (d.1587) of Lichfield, Staffordshire, and Anne Quiney of Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire. BA St John’s College, Oxford 1601; BA 1605, MA 1609, BD 1616. He was elected vice-president of St John’s 1616-1617 and 1621-22. President of the college in 1633-1648 and 1660-1667 and Dean of Salisbury in 1635. He was well-acquainted with William Laud and became his sole executor following his execution in 1645. He was ejected from his presidency at St John’s in 1648 and ‘lived quietly in Oxford thereafter’ (ODNB). He married Elizabeth (d.1668), daughter of William Robinson (Laud’s half-brother and Archdeacon of Nottinghamsire), in 1636; they had at least three sons and three daughters.

Books

When Baylie compounded for delinquency in 1647 his books (with other goods) were valued at £100. The subsequent exrent and disposition of his library is not known.
