John THORNTON d.1704
Biographical Note
BA Trinity College, Cambridge 1646, MA 1654. Tutor and chaplain to William Russell, 1st Duke of Bedford; as a nonconformist, other preferment was not open to him.
Books
In his will, Thornton directed that his mathematical instruments be given to Edmund Waller, along with his Mercator's Atlas "in two great volumes which are in the country", his "ivory instrument of curiosity now by me in a tinn box", and my "new great ring dyall"; his "paire of globes which are in my chamber in the country" were to go to his friend Thomas Gregory. Otherwise, he directed that his books be sold. His library was auctioned in London, 11.7.1705; no catalogue survives, but the sale was advertised in the Daily Courant.
