John MANNERS, Lord Roos 1676-1721

Biographical Note

2nd, but 1st surviving, son of John Manners, 9th Earl of Rutland and Katherine (Noel). Became Marquess of Granby in 1703, and succeeded his father as 2nd Duke of Rutland in 1711. Lord Lieutenant of Rutland 1712-15 and Leicestershire 1714-21. Sat as an MP for Derbyshire, Leicestershire, and Grantham between 1701 and 1711. Married 1. Catherine Russell; 2. Lucy or Lucinda Sherard.

Franks records armorial bookplates for Roos dated 1700 of different sizes and impressions (Franks *91, *99, 19640, 19641); the name is spelled ‘Mannors’ in these.

The extent and disposition of his library - which might have become absorbed into the collections at the family's seat at Belvoir Castle, Lincolnshire - are not established.
