John LYON, 4th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, 1663-1712

Biographical Note

Son of Patrick Lyon, 3rd Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne (1643–1695). He was educated at the University of St Andrews. and then travelled abroad. He was an opponent of presbyterianism and of the Act of Union but managed to avoid suspicion of active Jacobinism. He was a great encourager of horse breeding, and owned several race-horses.

The extent and disposition of his library is not known.
