John CLARKE fl.1740?

Clarke's bookplate (British Museum Franks Collection 5937)

Books

No biographical details have been traced of the "John Clarke surgeon Chichester" who used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 5937), which looks to date from ca.1740 (it was engraved by Francis Garden, engraver in London 1738-45, and 1753-68). The arms shown are a not quite correct version of the arms of the Clarkes, baronets, of Salford Shirland (the field of the shield should be gules, not argent).
