James MAXWELL of Carnsalloch d.1750
Biographical Note
Second son of George Maxwell, 9th of Carnsalloch, Dumfriesshire, a member of a very long-established family there. He inherited the estates from his father in 1727, but only for his lifetime (George, being disappointed with his sons, left the formal inheritance to a son of one of his daughters, James, later an officer in the Jacobite army in 1745. This James died unmarried in 1750.

Maxwell used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 20093); the extent and disposition of his library is not known.
