In 1713 he was elected a Representative Peer in the House of Lords of the United Kingdom. At the battle of Sheriffmuir in 1715 he fought for the Jacobite army, commanding a squadron of horse, with the rank of brigadier-general. He then fled the country, dying in Rome in 1723.
