====Biographical Note====
Son of [[crossreference::Roger Townshend 1595-1637|Sir Roger Townshend]], 1st baronet (1595-1637). Matriculated at [[education::St John's College, Cambridge]] in 1644; MA 1645. [[occupation::JP]] 1652; [[occupation::MP]] for [[location::Norfolk]] 1656, 1659, 1660. He was created [[personal title::Viscount Townshend]] in 1682. He married [[family::Mary Townshend|Mary]] (1634-1673) in 1648; after her death he married [[family::Mary Ashe|Mary]] (1652/3-1685), daughter of [[associates::Sir Joseph Ashe]], 1st baronet.

Surviving book bills and correspondence testify to the existence of a substantial library at his house at [[location::Raynham, Norfolk]], developed during his lifetime.
