Henry COAPE 1704-1778

Coape's bookplate (British Museum Franks Collection 6175)

Biographical Note

Son of Henry Coape, sheriff of Derbyshire in 1703, who had bought Duffield Hall there; the younger Henry inherited the estate in 1707. He died childless and the estate then passed to his relative Henry Porter.

Books

Coape used an engraved armorial bookplate of bookpile design (Franks 6175); he is also known to have subscribed to a number of 18th century books. The extent of his library is not known, but some of his books passed to his relative Elizabeth Caldwell (1754-1831) and thence to the library of Linley Hall, which was dispersed at Sotheby's in 1949.
