George COMPTON 6th Earl of Northampton 1692-1758

Biographical Note

Second son of George Compton, 4th Earl of Northampton, and Jane Fox; he inherited the title and family estates from his elder brother James, the 5th Earl, in 1754. After education at Eton College he joined the army where he became a major in the 2nd Life Guards in 1713. He was MP for Tamworth in 1727, and for Northampton 1727-54; he was a Lord of the Treasury 1742-44.

Books

Compton used an engraved armorial bookplate dated 1703, when he was "second son to ye Rt. Honble. George Earl of Northampton" (Franks 6574). The extent and disposition of his library are not known; his will has no mention of books, which would have passed with all the rest of his household goods to his widow Frances; the title was inherited by his nephew Charles.
