Francis HOWARD, 1st Earl of Effingham 1683-1743

Biographical Note

Second son of Francis Howard, 5th Baron Howard of Effingham, Governor of Virginia; he succeeded his elder brother Thomas Howard to the title and family estates in 1725, and was made Earl of Effingham in 1731. He was a captain in the Foot Guards in 1722 and rose up the military ranks thereafter, becoming the colonel of a troop of Horse Guards in 1740. He was Deputy Earl Marshal from 1731.

Books

Howard used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 15490), which seems to have been later adapted, perhaps for his son Thomas, who succeeded him as 2nd Earl.
