Elinor or Eleanor JAMES or BANCKES 1644/5–1719

Biographical Note

Elinor James (née Banckes), married the printer Thomas James in 1662. She was a prolific writer on politics, religion and trade, and between 1681 and 1716 wrote and printed more than ninety broadsides and pamphlets. She was buried in London on 19 July 1719.

Books

Elinor, as executrix for her husband’s will, donated his library of some 3,000 books to Sion College Library in 1711. She also donated portraits of her husband and herself. Elinor’s portrait features a copy of her best-known work, Mrs James’s Vindication of the Church of England (1687).
