Edward BYDE 1642/3-1712
Biographical Note
Of Ware Park, Hertfordshire, younger son of John Byde, sheriff of London; brother of Sir Thomas Byde (1628-1704), MP. Matriculated at Peterhouse, Cambridge 1658, entered Lincoln's Inn in the early 1660s.
Books
Numerous books survive with Byde's armorial stamp (which, unusually, incorporates his name in the outer frame), but the extent of his library is not known. In his will, he left all his furniture and household goods to Mary Beverley, "my books in my chamber and study at Lincolns Inn only excepted", but the fate of the books was not specified. One of the surviving books (National Library of Wales Wing U124) has an inscription referring to an auction sale of the library after his death, but there is no record of such a sale.
Characteristic Markings
As well as the use of the armorial stamp, the Armorials Database notes some books with Byde's inscription, and with hand-coloured bookplates.
