====Biographical Note====
Son of [[family::John Ashton]], [[occupation::rector|Rector]] of [[location::Middleton, Lancashire]]. BA [[education::St John's College, Cambridge]] 1582, MA 1585, [[occupation::fellow]] 1590, BD 1592.  [[occupation::chaplain|Chaplain]] to the Earl of Essex; [[occupation::rector]] of [[location::Halesworth, Suffolk]] 1606, of [[location::Slaidburn, Yorkshire]], of [[location::Middleton]] 1618.

====Books====
Ashton [[bequest::bequeathed]] [[monetary value::100 marks]] to [[organisations::St John’s College, Cambridge]] to buy books “of the fathers or the new writers as they see fit”. This was done, and ca.100 books remain in the library there today, mostly sixteenth-century [[subject::theology|theological]] works, including a number of [[language::Hebrew]] books. We do not know the extent of his own library.
