William STEPHENS 1696-1760
Biographical Note
A member of a long-established family from Wexford who entered the University of Glasgow in 1715, graduated MD at Leiden in 1718 and then went on to become MD at Trinity College Dublin in 1724. He was professor of botany at Trinity College 1726-33 and of chemistry 1732-60, and practised as a physician in Dublin. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1718, was a founding member of the Royal Dublin Society and was physician to Dr Steevens' Hospital. He published works on a range of medical, scientific and antiquarian subjects.
Books
Stephens used two slightly different bookplates engraved to the same design (Franks 28034-5); the extent and disposition of his library is not known.
