Born in St Andrews and St Leonards, Fife, Scotland on 8 Jun 1745 to Thomas Craigie and Catherine Reid.

Used an engraved bookplate (Franks 7221): '[Craigie, Wm. Chas.], anonymous. (The plate of Thomas Craigie without inscription.)' This appears to be the bookplate of his father Thomas Craigie with its inscription removed.
The extent and disposition of his library is not known.
