John MAUD d.1731

Biographical Note

Son of Gamaliel Maud, weaver, of London. He claimed freedom of the Weaver's Company by patrimony in 1711, and in his will, dated 1723 and proved in 1731, he is styled ‘Citizen and Weaver of London’. Notices in the London press of his death in March 1731 describe him as a ‘an eminent Chymist’, with premises in Aldersgate Street, London. The business of drug and chemical manufacturing at these premises was continued by at least two later generations of Mauds.

He had an engraved armorial bookplate (‘Johan. Maud. Philochim. ad insig. Clav. Aurat vulgo vocato Aldersgate Street, Lond.’): Franks 20018.

There is no mention of books in his will, and the content and disposition of his library are not established.
