John HUTTON d.1764

Books

Little has been traced about Hutton, other than that he was a paper stainer who lived at the time of his death in or around St Paul's Churchyard. His extensive library was auctioned in London over 29 days, beginning 15 October 1764; the sale catalogue includes 5716 lots, but the titlepage noted that there were upwards of thirty thousand books, and the auctioneer stated that they were all Hutton's. The books were almost entirely in English, across a wide range of subjects. Both William Herbert and William Hunter are known to have been purchasers at the sale.
