John BAXTER ca.1737-1798
Biographical Note
Son of the builder of Penicuik House, John Baxter (d.1770). John and his brother Alexander were sent to Rome to study architecture by James Clerk of Penicuik. He was in Rome between August 1761 and 1667, and during his stay was made an honorary member of the Accademia di S.Luca. On his return to Scotland, Baxter took over his father’s architecture business, and worked for many years for the Duke of Gordon. He died in Edinburgh.
Books
Baxter's library was sold at auction in Edinburgh by Mr Martin on 11th December 1798 over seven days. It comprised of 600 lots. Edinburgh Central Library holds one of the only surviving copies of the catalogue.
