Jabez HUGHES 1684/5-1731

Biographical Note

Younger son of John Hughes, clerk in a London insurance office; the family had a strong puritan tradition and he was probably educated at dissenting academies in London. He had administrative work in the Stamp Office but like his brother John his main activities were literary ones, as a poet, literary editor and a translator. After his death it transpired that he had embezzled around £4000 of public funds between 1729 and 1731, and his estate was sued for reimbursement.

Books

Hughes's library was sold by retail sale in London, along with the books of his brother John, beginning 31 January 1733. No catalogue survives, but the sale was advertised in several newspapers.
