Biographical Note
Third son of Walter Campbell, capt. of Skipness, Argyll (1672-1753), he was probably educated at Glasgow University. He became a wealthy Glasgow merchant, closely connected with the Duke of Argyll. He was a Member of the Scottish Parliament (1702-1707) and of the British Parliament (1707-1708, 1716-1734). He had been a commissioner for the union of Scotland and England 1706. He built a house at Shawfield outside Glasgow which was demolished by rioters in 1725 and rebuilt with compensation monies. He later sold it and purchased the island of Islay, Argyll. By the end of his life he was Campbell of Ardentenie and Islay.
