Biographical Note
Born at Reading, son of John Blake, wharfinger. BA St John's College, Oxford 1687, MA 1694, BD 1696, DD 1712. He became domestic chaplain to Sir William Dawes in 1712 and became a prebendary of Chester Cathedral in 1710, of York Minster in 1715. He was appointed archdeacon of York in 1720 and held several other ecclesiastical livings. He was noted as a classicist and theologian, and also published several poems. A clerical contemporary described him as "a devoted scholar, meticulous liturgist, and a genial companion, who occasionally enjoyed a very spruce dinner and more frequently a domestic glass of wine".

Blake's library was auctioned in York, beginning 13 March 1732.
