Alexander DUNLOP 1684-1747

Biographical Note

Born ion North Carolina, son of William Dunlop; the family moved to Glasgow when William was appointed Principal of Glasgow University in 1690. He became professor of Greek at Glasgow University in 1704 and retained that position for the rest of his life, being noted as a good teacher; he published a Greek grammar (second edition, 1731).

His son of the same name was born in 1717 and took his MA at Glasgow University in 1734. He was keeper of the University Library 1739-42 and elected professor of Hebrew and Oriental languages in 1745.

Books

The libraries of both men were auctioned in a combined sale in Glasgow in or soon after 1750.
