Samuel STUBBS 1715-1753

Biographical Note

Son of John Stubbs (d.1739), dissenting minister at Wolverhampton. Samuel attended the dissenting Findern Academy before becoming minister at the dissenting congregations at Lichfield and Longdon until his early death in 1753, aged 38.

Books

He amassed a small but valuable library, some of which he had inherited from his father, who had in turn inherited them from Roger Morrice. His brother John lent the books to the Warrington Academy some time after Stubbs' death. When the Academy was dissolved in 1786, the books were transferred to Manchester Academy. On 16 November 1787, John’s widow Elizabeth gave them “for the use of the Academy at Manchester for ever” and they were subsequently gifted to the Academy by Miss Newnham (Stubbs’ niece) in 1813. The collection is now at Harris Manchester College, Oxford.

Characteristic Markings

Stubbs inscribed all his books "Saml. Stubbs".
