The full extent and disposition of his library is unknown. It is recorded in An account of the depredations committed on the Clan Campbell… that in June 1685, books valued at £100 (Scots) were plundered from John Campbell and his tenants by the Laird of Lochzeill:
"books, a great house Bible, Josephus his works, Turks historie, Polybius, the Countess of Pembrooks Arcadia, together with several other great volumes; together with several small grammar authors" (p.52)
