Archibald DRUMMOND d.1680

Biographical Note

Second son of James Drummond of Deanstoun (d.1634), minister of Fowlis, and Janet Malcom, daughter of John Malcom, minister of Perth. He graduated M.A from the University of St Andrews in 1641. Admitted minister to the charge of Muthill in the presbytery of Auchterarder in 1646. He left in 1649 having been deposed for “acceding to a divisive supplication." In 1655, he took the charge of location:Auchterarder from his brother. Archibald died after 25th January 1680, and is buried in the Chapel of Innerpeffray. He married Susanna Douglas, who predeceased him.

The family (his father and two brothers) are described as being “eminently distinguished for their literary abilities, for their exemplary conduct, and for their eloquent and persuasive preaching. Deeply learning in the oriental languages, in philosophy and divinity, they were in every way qualified for the ministry…” (Malcom, p.56)

Books

Surviving volumes of Archibald’s books are known through the library of his brother James Drummond (d.1695), Bishop of Brechin. James’ library was bequeathed to the Earl of Erroll at Slains Castle, which in turn was purchased in 1918 by the Mitchell Library in Glasgow. Books in the collection with Archibald’s provenance include:

Lancelot Andrewes Tortvra Torti: sive, Ad Matthaei Torti librvm responsio (London, 1609)

John Davenant Determinationes quæstionum quarundam theologicarum (1634)

Isaac Casaubon De rebus sacris et ecclesiasticis exercitationes (London, 1614), inscribed “Librum hunc debuit frator meus Arch. Drummond comiti Tullibardino.” As well as “Archibaldus Drummond.”

Characteristic Markings

He inscribed his books “Arch. Drummond” or “Archibaldus Drummond.”
