James ANNAND d.1605

Biographical Note

Belonged to the family of Annand of Auchterellon, Aberdeendeenshire. He was student of law in 1549 at the King’s College, Aberdeen. Before 1560, he was a priest in the Bomish Church, holding the prebend of St Johns at Kirkwall. After the reformation, he was appointed chancellor of Orkney by Bishop Adam Bothwell, and held the benefices of Lady and Cross in Sanday, and from 1567, St Mary’s in Westray. Annand was a pioneer of the reformed Church in Orkney, and lived in Kirkwall on Orkney. In 1568, Along with Mr Gilbert Fousie, he was appointed Commissioner of Orkney by the General Assembly, and tasked with expanding the Kirk in the area.

The full extent and disposition of Annand’s library is unknown. At least 4 books have been identified as his:

A Hebrew New Testament (Paris, 1551) (Harvard Houghton *FC5.C4925.551t)

Peter Lombard’s Sentences (Paris, 1550) (GUL Bn6.b4), which also belonged to William Skene ca(1525-1582)

Hector Boece’s Scotorum historiae (Paris, 1527) (NLS SBA.Add.1)

and

Erasmus’ edition of the works of Hieronymus (Basel, 1536-38) (NLS, RB.1.18), also owned by Bishop Adam Bothwell.

Characteristic Markings

Annand’s bindings were often gilt tooled with the motto SPERABO and surrounded by the letters M I A (M[agister] I[acobus] A[nnand])

His book at Harvard is bound in “contemporary Parisian brown calf, covers tooled in gilt and blind to a panel design; in center of each cover a diamond lozenge of hatched trefoil tools, flanked at top and bottom by gilt-tooled motto "SPERABO" and at 3 of 4 points with the letters "M[agister] I[acobus] A[nnand]"
