Sir William GAGE, 2nd baronet ca.1650-1727
Biographical Note
Son of Sir Edward Gage of Hengrave, 1st baronet, a member of a long-established Roman Catholic gentry family based in Sussex and Suffolk; he inherited the title and family estates from his father in 1707. He was educated in Paris, and met his wife Mary Charlotte Bond at the court of the dowager Queen Henrietta Maria; they were married at Hengrave in 1675, attended by James Duke of York. Gage is credited with introducing the greengage to England in the late 17th century.
Books
Gage's library was sold by retail sale in London, beginning 8 January 1729, as part of a joint sale with "the library of a late eminent civilian" and a physician.
