John MILWARD 1619/20-1683?

Biographical Note

Son of George Milward, gentleman, of Shepton Mallet, Somerset. BA New Inn Hall, Oxford 1641, MA and fellow of Corpus Christi College, Oxford 1648. Vice-president of Corpus 1649-57 (when he resigned his fellowship). Rector of Darfield, Yorkshire 1655; named as an assistant to the commission for the ministry of the West Riding, 1657. Ejected 1661 and returned at some point to Somerset, where he was licensed to preach as a Presbyterian in Farncombe in 1672.

Books

In his will, Milward made bequests of £20 and £10 to the Bodleian Library and to the library of Corpus Christi, to buy books. He also directed that a number of his nieces and nephews should be bought “a fair Bible well bound”. He bequeathed some specific books to other independent ministers, allowed his executor to take books or give books to his relatives up to the value of £5, and instructed that all the rest of his printed books should be divided between John James of London and John King of Yarmouth.

Characteristic Markings

Two of Milward's books have been found at Corpus Christi College, Oxford with a note suggesting they were bequeathed to the college: M.6.2, H.4.9
