John ALEXANDER 1694-1777
Biographical Note
John Alexander was the son of John Alexander, of Kildrummy, Aberdeenshire, and Anna Gordon, and was born in 1694. He was educated at Marischal College, Aberdeen, 1706-1710, where he was Milne Bursar in 1707 and was the Episcopal Minister of Alloa, 1724-1777, and Bishop of Dunkeld, 1743-1777. He died, apparently unmarried, on 24 April 1777. No testament survives.

The extent and disposition of his library are unknown.
Characteristic Markings
He used a Chippendale engraved armorial bookplate (not in Franks) with the motto “per mare, per terras” and the inscription “Rev John Alexander”. An example is in the NLS Henderson Smith Collection, J.H.S.1(9.1)."
