John DRUMMOND of Logie Almond 1713-1776

Biographical Note

John Drummond, 3rd of Logie Almond, Perthshire, was the son of Mr. William Drummond of Ballathie and Elizabeth Oliphant and the nephew of his predecessor, the Jacobite Thomas Drummond, 2nd of Logie Almond. He was born in August 1713, succeeded his father in 1741 and his uncle in 1758, and spent much of his adult life as an officer in the Prussian service, serving under the Scottish Field-Marshal Keith. He was aide-de-camp to Frederick the Great by 1750. Later he married Lady Catherine Murray, daughter of William, 3rd Earl of Dunmore, and died 9 September 1776 at Logie Almond, leaving several children, including Sir William Drummond (1769-1827), the diplomatist and author.

Books

Books from Logie Almond’s library are in a number of public collections. His copy of Ben Jonson’s Workes (London, 1640), later owned by the great Scottish collector David Laing, is now in the Rasmussen Hines Collection, his copy of Edward Grimeston’s General Historie of the Netherlands (London, 1608) is at National Library of Scotland RB.m.199, and his copy of the periodical The Englishman is at Glasgow University Library BD12-f.16,17.

Characteristic Markings

He used a Chippendale armorial bookplate (Franks 9123) with the motto “nil timeo” and the inscription “John Drummond of Logy Almond Esqr”.
