Sir Charles EGLETON d.1769

Biographical Note

A successful London merchant, who was a sheriff of London in 1743; the date that he was knighted has not been established. In his will, he described himself as "of Old Bond Street" in London (Middlesex).

Books

Egleton used an engraved armorial bookplate, made before he was knighted, which exists in two states (Franks 9670, 9671). The extent of his library is not known; it would have passed, along with much of the rest of his estate, to his eldest son Charles, who changed his name to Charles Kent in 1762 on the inheritance of an estate, and who later became a baronet.
