Sir Robert CHAPLIN, 1st Bt. ca.1670-1726

Biographical Note

Son of Francis Chaplin, Mayor of London and Anne Huett. Middle Temple 1685, Inner Temple 1688, called to the bar 1692, bencher 1717. MP of Louth, Lincolnshire 1715-1721. Director of the South Sea Company 1718-1721. He was expelled from Parliament and stripped of his directorship after the 'South Sea smash', the majority of his estate being forfeited by an Act of Parliament preventing the company's senior management from leaving the country.

Books

The sale of Chaplin's library was advertised in the Daily Courant in November 1722. No catalogue survives, but an inventory of his goods published in 1721 lists "some bound books" in "Sir Robert's Study" at his house in St Martin in the Fields, London, and "some books at Louthe".
