John OKES or OAKES 1645/6-1710

Biographical Note

Born at Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, son of Thomas Okes. BA St Edmund Hall, Oxford 1665, MA 1667. Vicar of Whitegate, Cheshire 1665-70, when he was deprived as a non-juror.

Books

Okes bequeathed his books to the church of Wotton-under-Edge, to create a parish library there. The books are largely theological, with a number on oriental studies; some have inscriptions of Robert Cholmondeley, patron of the Whitegate living, and other members of that family. The library was deposited in Christ Church, Oxford in 1964; 317 volumes survive today.
