John MILNER 1628-1703

Biographical Note

The "libraries of the late Reverend Mr. John Milner, A.M. of Cambridge, and an eminent counsellor" were auctioned in London in 1715. This may be the man of that name who was a Prebendary of Ripon, deprived as a nonjuror, and who retired to St John’s College, Cambridge, but the dates do not obviously fit, and this Milner left his books to his son (also John), prebendary of Durham (d.1722). The only other candidate identified in Venn in the John Milner, d.1705, who was a minor canon and librarian of Durham Cathedral. Although placed under the heading of the first man, the identification is not certain, and Alston understandably says "owner not identified".

Books

This joint sale (the eminent counsellor not being identified) was held in London, 4.4.1715; the catalogue contains 1733 lots, divided under the usual headings, with no way of telling which books came from which source.
