John MESSENGER 1679-1749
Biographical Note
Son of William Messenger and Elizabeth (Yeoman), he inherited the estate of Fountains, Yorkshire, which contained the ruins of the despoiled Cicstercian monastery Fountains Abbey. Married Margaret Scrope.
Books
He used an engraved armorial plate: ‘of Fountains in the County of York, Esqr., 1698’ (Franks *361).
The Roman Catholic Messenger family owned Fountains from 1627-1767, and during this time (and probably after its sale), possessed some manuscripts from the abbey, but the wider content and disposition of Messenger’s library are not established.
