Thomas LYNFORD 1650-1724

Biographical Note

The son of Samuel Lynford (1609–1657?), canon of Exeter, Lynford was educated at Newark and then at Bury St Edmunds grammar school before being admitted sizar at Christ's College, Cambridge (1666, BA 1670–71, MA 1674), fellow 1675). In 1685 he became rector of St Edmund the King, Lombard Street, London. By 1700 he was a chaplain-in-ordinary to William III who had him installed as a canon of Westminster. He later served as chaplain to Queen Anne and to George I. He became archdeacon of Barnstaple in 1709.

Books

ODNB records that on his death 'His books were divided among his wife, Christ's College, Sion College, the deans and chapters of Westminster and Exeter, and [his nephew Dr William] Herring'.

Sion College has a copy of Gerónimo de Blancas, Aragonensium rerum commentarii, 1588, with the inscription 'E Bibliotheca D. Thomas Lynford' (Lambeth Palace Library B57.7/B59).
