Luke MILBOURNE or MILBORNE ca.1672-1720

Biographical Note

Son of Luke Milbourne, clerk, of Wroxall, Warwickshire. MA Pembroke College, Cambridge 1670. Vicar of St Stephen by St Albans from 1672. Rector of Osmandiston, Norfolk, 1677-1702. Lecturer of St Leonard, Shoreditch 1688-1720, and rector of St Ethelburga, London, 1704-1720. Also held chaplaincies in Hamburg and Rotterdam. He was also a published poet.

Books

Milbourne's books were sold at auction in London on 14 November 1720, alongside those of John Broughton. The catalogue describes the listed items as 'A curious Collection of Choice and Valuable Books in most Languages and Faculties, neatly bound, gilt back, or letter'd; with most of the Classicks... and Old Elzevir Editions'. The catalogue presumably begins by listing Milbourne's books, just under a thousand in total, as a subsequent heading indicates the start of Broughton's library. Books are divided under headings according to language and format, and Milbourne's books included Greek, Latin, English.
