William COCKBURN 1669-1739
Biographical Note
Cockburn was educated at the universities of Edinburgh and Leiden and became a licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians in London in 1694. He served for several years as a naval physician and made a reputation (and a fortune) with a cure for dysentery. In 1731 he became physician to the Greenwich Hospital and also had an extensive and wealthy private practice. He was buried in Westminster Abbey.
