John SOMMERS ca.1743-1760

Biographical Note

Son of William Sommers of Ashby Puerorum, Lincolnshire. Educated at Kirkby Lonsdale, Westmorland, before being admitted to Trinity College, Cambridge in 1736. BA 1739/40, fellow 1742 and MA 1743. Served as junior dean to the college from 1756 until his death, and from 1758 he was the vicar of Over, Cambridgeshire.

Books

Sommers' probate inventory includes over 100 books and manuscripts, the majority of which are not itemised, valued at £5 15s 6d (from a total estate valued at £150 8s 10.3/4d). The unitemised volumes include '51 Magazines' and 'about 90 Sermons in Manuscript'. The titles listed are mostly in English, Latin and Greek, with a predominance of literature and rhetoric alongside some theology and other subjects.
