Robert LEVET d.1658

Biographical Note

BA Jesus College, Cambridge 1601, MA 1604. Vicar of Wood Ditton, Cambridgeshire 1618, and rector of Cheveley, 1623; he was ejected from both livings in 1644, charged on a number of counts including pluralism, infrequent preaching, and misbehaviour with the curate’s wife. He remained in the area as he was buried at Wood Ditton in December 1658.

Books

Levet’s will refers to property in and around Newmarket; he bequeathed “all my books at Exning” to Thomas Cooke, son or another relation of Edward Cooke, living in a house owned by Levet which was left to him. Exning is just north of Newmarket, Wood Ditton just south, suggesting that Levet may have lived there during the Interregnum, although he describes himself in the opening of his will as "of Wood Ditton". The size of the collection at Exning is not known.

Characteristic markings

None of Levet's books have been identified.
