Sir James CARNEGIE of Pittarrow, 3rd bart, 1715-1765

Biographical Note

The eldest son of Sir John Carnegie of Pittarrow (1673-1729), 2nd Baronet, and Mary Burnett. The year after his father's death, he succeeded his cousin James Carnegie, the attainted 5th Earl of Southesk, as heir male of the Southesk family without being able to take the title. To keep him from adopting the family's Jacobinism, he was educated at the University of Glasgow (1730).

He entered the House of Commons for Kincardineshire in 1741 and served until his death. In 1744 he obtained a captaincy in the 21st Foot and fought at Fontenoy and in the suppression of the Forty-five rebellion. He was appointed lord lieutenant of Kincardine in 1746.
