John STOKES d.1568
Biographical Note
Of Bedfordshire. BA Queens' College, Cambridge 1541, fellow there from 1543 (possibly also later of Trinity College), BD 1549. He was University chaplain and librarian from 1556 until the time of his death. In 1560 he became president of Queens' and archdeacon of York; he held various other ecclesiastical preferments.
Books
Stokes's probate inventory includes ca.150 books, valued at £26 17s 10d (from a total estate valued at £109 7s 6d). The books are mostly in Latin, with some English ones, with a predominance of theology alongside some classics and other topics. His will includes no specific mention of books.
